Education. The true way out of poverty.

GivingTuesday is a global generosity movement, unleashing the power of people and organizations to transform their communities and the world.

Here at the Karat School Project, our mission is to transform communities and the world by alleviating poverty through the gift of education to everyone with an emphasis on women and girls.

Please join us for #GivingTuesday to raise $5,000 for RV children and their families.

Kimberly’s Story:

I first met Kimberly on El Camino Real in Palo Alto.

Before the pandemic, I thought that the Recreation Vehicles (RVs) parked by the side of the road were people who came to tailgate at a Stanford Game and just forgot to leave. But one morning during my run, I noticed a child come out of one of the vehicles with nothing on but a saggy diaper. So I got closer, and a second child came out of the RV, that girl was Kimberly.

“What are you doing here?” I ignorantly asked.

“We live here,” she replied and looked ashamed.

“Are you going to school online?” I asked.

“To what? To where? What is that? My school is closed because of COVID,” she answered.

At this point her mother came out.

At that point, schools, along with everything else in the country, had been shut down for over 2 weeks. All the children I knew were attending school online except for the 25 children living in those RVs.

Thanks to your past donations, we have provided books, meal cards, clothing, educational support, and other things that RV families need.

Kimberly asked me to “bring more space books” and with your donation we can make that happen.

Karen’s Story: From El Camino Real To The Safe Parking to an Apartment

Karen grew up in foster care. She became a teen mother at age 19. Due to health issues, Karen was not able to keep a job.

As a single mother with health challenges, her life was already hard. When Covid hit, she quickly fell into despair. She became worried about where to find food for her child or how she was going afford more diapers and other urgently needed necessities now that her chances of getting a job were nonexistent.

In a recent interview, Karen said, “When Evelyne came knocking at my RV, I didn’t want to open. I was too sad and too ashamed. Actually, I thought it was the owner coming for rent. But she insisted, and she kept saying, 'I’m here to help, what do you need?'”

Karen received supplies for her and her son, and we advocated for her. With help from our partners, she is now moved into an apartment and looking to get her GED to continue her education.

When you donate you bring hope and new beginnings.
