Once a week out a location in Yopougon, Abidjan, Ivory Coast The Karat School Project offers a reading and writing program. Through the program children that are not enrolled in school come to listen to stories being read to them by Marina and Gisele, they learn their ABCs and are given material to write some of the letters they have just learned. For many of the children attending, this is their first exposure to anything educational. Children enjoy learning new materials each week and have been asking to come more than once a week to learn more. We sometimes have illiterate adults and parents join the program to learn as well. On average we serve 48 children each week.
Kids with growling stomachs cannot focus on learning. This is why we provide a meal for the children who are attending our reading and writing. We know the living conditions of the children we serve is is an important part of our mission because we want them to be able to learn and retain what they learn.
Clothing & Shoe Distribution
As part of our community outreach program we regularly hit the streets of Abidjan to find children who sell items at traffic lights to feed their families. We give them new pairs of shoes. The goal of this campaign is to spread the joy of the holidays by giving them something they will use everyday.
